I carried home a special sense of excitement and the realisation that, at the end of the day, we are all connected, regardless of the language we speak or where we come from.

Katlin, Bulgaria, Age 20

That experience taught me to pack fewer expectations in my suitcase, because the journey life has in store for you can be even more beautiful than anything you could have imagined.

I have always loved travelling, even though I haven’t always had the opportunity to do it as often as I would like. I believe that things don’t always work out on the first try, but sooner or later, they do. What matters is to stop counting the attempts and simply take action.

Three years ago, I was selected to take part in the Erasmus+ programme through my school. At the time, I was still new to the school and most of the people around me were strangers, which made the adventure ahead even more exciting.

That experience taught me to pack fewer expectations in my suitcase, because the journey life has in store for you can be even more beautiful than anything you could have imagined.

Our destination was Italy, and we stayed there for three weeks.

Not only did I gain valuable practical experience in interior design, but I also had the opportunity to make new friends and meet people from different backgrounds. I discovered Italy’s history and art, experienced a language I did not speak, and encountered the unfamiliar yet beautiful souls of Milan.

After such a journey, I was left with more than just memories. I carried home a special sense of excitement and the realisation that, at the end of the day, we are all connected, regardless of the language we speak or where we come from.

I was also excited about meeting the people at the company where I worked during my stay. Their guidance, observations and advice helped me develop my skills and become increasingly confident and capable in my work in interior design. It was a valuable experience that allowed me not only to put what I had learned into practice, but also to make decisions about my future career path.

Of course, when you stay somewhere for a longer period of time, you gradually develop your own rhythm of life. You discover your favourite places, establish routines and begin to feel part of the world around you. I won’t lie — I wasn’t ready to leave Milan.

I believe that every journey leaves a mark on us, but some places and experiences are harder to say goodbye to than others. This was one of those journeys for me. Italy gave me more than I had expected — new knowledge, meaningful encounters, friendships and the feeling that the world is much bigger, more beautiful and more connected than we sometimes imagine.

Sometimes, the most valuable part of a journey is not the place you visit, but the person you become while you are there.
