At the southern end of the municipality of Beja, the village of Cabeça Gorda is bounded by the villages of Trindade, Santa Clara do Louredo, Salvada, the town of Beja and in the south by Mértola. The Freguesia was created in 1901.
The name of Cabeça Gorda, has topographic sense and is related to the orographic location - a high mountain - "fat" in the expression used by the founders of the village. If the Arabs passed through here but its presence was not very significant, they only left a few coins as archaeological remains, found in 1874 in the works of excavation of a dwelling.
Nowadays the Cabeça Gorda village, has 1570 inhabitants and the main economic activities are agriculture, small trade, industry and tourism.
It concentrated several groups, including the Association of Young Carpe Diem na Aldeia, the Group JODICUS Theatre, the Sporting Clube Recreativo of Cabeça Gorda Gorda (with sections of BTT and Pigeons), the Recreational Society of Cabeça Gorda, the Coral group of Cabeça Gorda, the boys of the village group, the Girls Sing group, the Association of Fish and Game, the Group Demons on Wheels and also the group dance Just dance Kolors.
The work done by the Junta de Freguesia de Cabeça Gorda is directed to the entire local population and for all age groups. Some of the main activities carried out are:
- Organization of cultural events;
- Training/information activities for youngs;
- Promotion of educational and recreational activities for children;
- Celebration of Feast Days;
- Promotion of wellness and active aging activities directed at elderly-Social Centre of Cabeça Gorda.
