Archipelagos Institute of Marine Conservation is a non-profit NGO, dedicated for over 20 years to defend and protect the biodiversity of the Northeastern Mediterranean, with an emphasis on the Greek seas and islands, through a combination of applied scientific research, education, conservation actions and community engagement.
Archipelagos Institute being based year- round in the eastern Aegean Sea islands, while also using its 3 research boats, carried out a large number of multidisciplinary research and conservation activities, aiming to address key environmental problems of the region.
The regular activities of Archipelagos Institute focus on:
i) Marine Research & Conservation, ii) Fisheries Research & Management, iii) Forest & Freshwater Ecosystem Management, iv) Research & Conservation of Island Flora & Fauna, v) Agronomic Research & Seed Bank Projects, vi)Laboratory Assessment of Environmental Impacts, vii) GIS Mapping of Marine & Terrestrial Habitats & Biodiversity, viii) Applications of Renewable Energy Sources, ix) Illustration of Flora & Fauna of the Aegean Sea, x) Graphic Design for Environmental Awareness Material, xi) Animation xii) Environmental Photography xiii) Documentary Film Production, xiv) Information Technology, xv) Legal Work, xvi) Public Relations
The combined result of the above aim to contribute towards the design and implementation of sustainable management and conservation measures, as well as for the design of awareness raising campaigns and environmental education material. These campaigns target the local schools and communities, as the wider public in Greece and the E.U
As an NGO dedicated to applied environmental research and conservation in the region, the provision of hands-on volunteering and environmental education programs has always been an integral part of our mission and activities.
