The Portuguese Red Cross is an humanitarian, non-governmental institution, with its basis on volunteering and social interest, and non-profit, and its activities are according to the Humanitarian International Law and abiding to the Fundamental Principles and recommendations from the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
It is the Red Cross’s mission to provide humanitarian and social assistance – taking special consideration to the more vulnerable, preventing and repairing the suffering, and contributing to the defense of life, health and human dignity.
In the year 2009, in Solferino, the declaration of the Youth of the Red Cross, presents the understanding of youth as an agent of change, encouraging the young people’s individual capacities, as well as the intercultural communication, the empowerment of the youth’s part in the develppment and implementation of programs so as to empower the communities where they take place, and the growing of the attention given to formal and non-formal education.
The Póvoa de Varzim's delegation of the Portuguese Red Cross, concerning the Red Youth of Red Cross, has worked with the local communities' youth in schools and other youth environments, as long as with vulnerable children.
Our projects are focused in central themes, like social inclusion, health-oriented education, and active citizenship. Their purpose is tro promove social responsability, solidarity, cooperation and tolerance between every young person and the whole.
The Póvoa de Varzim Delegation of the Portuguese Red Cross has close to 200 volunteers, of which 130 are active, and provide services for the local community. The Póvoa de Varzim's Red Cross Youth has 71 volunteers, with ages from 13 to 35 years old. It develops prevention projects like the Children Camps “Explore, Discover and Learn!” summer and easter camps, and social inclusion like “Feed a Cause”, studying help, “Cruzar Com Arte” clothing products (refurbished and second-hand products sold with profits helping the Red Cross), pilgrim's help and “Accompany those who need”, in partnership with the local city hall, schools, public social solidarity institutions and private entities.
All projects require the management of volunteers that will be provided by professionals, volunteer coordinators, that will present and discuss the actions they will develop throughout the year.
The public target of the Youth projects are children and children of the Póvoa de Varzim's region, envolving close to 1000 children and youngsters.
