Das Ökologische Schullandheim Spohns Haus (VEUBE e.V.) wurde 2005 in der Gemeinde Gersheim von der damaligen Landesregierung initiiert. Dieser Ort wurde ausgewählt, da dieser in dem (damals geplanten) Biosphärenreservat liegt und außerdem reich an Flora und Fauna ist. Die Tatsache, dass Gersheim an der Grenze zu Frankreich liegt, trug zur Symbolkraft für die europäische Ausrichtung bei. Spohns Haus ist ein außerschulisches Bildungszentrum im Bereich "Bildung für nachhaltige Entwicklung" mit trinationaler Ausrichtung (Deutschland, Frankreich, Polen). Das Ökologische Schullandheim hat die Aufgabe, Konzepte für nachhaltige Entwicklung zu unterschiedlichen Themen zu entwickeln (Erneuerbare Energien, Atomausstieg, Mobilität, Ernährung, Klima, Wasser, Wald, Artenvielfalt, Konsum, Kleidung etc.). Diese Konzepte werden bei Aufenthalten von Schulklassen, aber auch bei internationalen Projekten, umgesetzt und dabei werden die Gruppen für Probleme und Fragen der Umwelt sensibilisiert. Der europäische und solidarische Gedanke soll bei internationalen Begegnungsmaßnahmen gefördert werden. Dabei stehen kulturelle Vielfalt, Toleranz und Akzeptanz für das Anderssein und Andersdenken im Mittelpunkt.

The ecological Education Centre Spohns Haus (VEUBE e.V.) was initiated in 2005 in the community of Gersheim by the then state government. This place was chosen because it is in the (then planned) biosphere reserve and is also rich in flora and fauna. The fact that Gersheim is on the border with France contributed to the symbolic power of the European orientation.
Spohns Haus is an extracurricular education center in the field of “Education for Sustainable Development” with a trinational orientation (Germany, France, Poland). The ecological Education Centre has the task of developing concepts for sustainable development on various topics (renewable energies, nuclear phase-out, mobility, nutrition, climate, water, forest, biodiversity, consumption, clothing etc.). These concepts are implemented when school classes come, but also in international projects and the groups are made aware of problems and questions relating to the environment. The idea of European and solidarity should be promoted in international meeting measures. The focus is on cultural diversity, tolerance and acceptance of being different and thinking differently.
