Rikolto is an international NGO with more than 50 years’ experience in partnering with farmer organisations and food chain stakeholders across Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America. Our mission is ‘a sustainable income for farmers and nutritious, affordable food for everyone’. We work in three spheres of action – sustainable production, inclusive markets and an enabling environment – in three global programmes: Sustainable rice, Good Food for Cities, and Sustainable Cocoa and Coffee.

We combine activities targeting short-term needs with long-term investments and we develop and pilot innovative and scalable practices, joining forces with a broad network of partners from different backgrounds, sectors and territories. Next, we share the evidence we have gathered through strategic networks to promote scaling of our practices and to influence the international political agenda in favour of sustainable and inclusive food systems.

Rikolto’s approach is a sustainable food systems approach: this means that our focus is not merely on consumers or producers, but on all the actors involved in the production, processing, distribution and consumption of food. We do this because all actors are influenced by a myriad of factors, and we need to take that into account if we want to understand the potential impact of our interventions.
