MONTIS is a non-profit nature conservation NGO that operates in Portugal at national level. MONTIS was founded in 2014, with focus on managing territories, with relevance to the conservation of natural values. Is based in Vouzela, district of Viseu.
The mission of MONTIS is the production of biodiversity through a sustainable management of natural heritage, participated, transparent, and open to all.
We manage abandoned marginal land, supporting or restoring key natural processes such as soil quality, water management, and habitat enhancement, contributing to increase the value of biodiversity and fire resilience involving people and business.
Since its creation, MONTIS has developed a regular and strong volunteer programme aimed at direct management and monitoring of the evolution of natural systems, so that participants can form independent and sustained opinions on land management options.
Our target groups are very broad. We aim to involve everyone in practical nature management activities, regardless of their age, sex, physical condition, or other characteristics. Some target groups have been more directly involved in our activities, namely young people through volunteering programmes from ESC and LIFE Programmes, university students, teachers, and researchers (internships, partnerships, and a dedicated academic volunteering programme), disabled people and schools (long-term partnership with local institutions) and public institutions (civil parishes and municipalities).
