Legebitra is non-governmental, non-profit, humanitarian organization with an official status of organization in public interest on the fields of social protection and health. Its aims are to improve psycho-social welfare and to tackle health concerns of LGBT persons, especially LGBT youth, by offering services to the target population and implementing systemic and structural changes.
Legebitra evolved from a project “Volunteer youth and student group: LEGEBITRA” initiated by Student Organization of University of Ljubljana in 1998. In the following years, the project grew from one activity into a range of various activities fully trying to encompass the needs of its primary target group – LGBT youth. In 2001 the organization was officially registered under a Societies Act (Official Gazette of the Republic of Slovenia, no. 61/2006) as a non-governmental organization.
Today, Legebitra is a LGBT civil society organization active in the fields of youth, social protection, mental, physical and sexual health, education and human rights. It advocates social and systemic changes based on respect for sexual orientation, gender identity and/or sexual expression. It takes into account the intersection of personal circumstances, such as health, nationality, race or ethnic origin, language, religion or belief, handicap, age, social status, wealth, education or any other personal circumstances.
Mission:
By continuously providing accessible, confidential and professional services, we provide support and empowerment for individuals, LGBT communities and people living with HIV (PLHIV). Through advocacy, we contribute improving legal protection, increasing the visibility of LGBT people and understanding of the position of PLHIV.
