Salviamo l’Orso Onlus is a non-profit, apolitical and non-partisan Association which deals with the protection of the brown Marsicanus bear and the conservation of its natural habitat through concrete actions. As the bear can be considered as an “umbrella species”to protect, the other animals and plants, living in the same natural environment, are indirectly safeguarded. Through the development of ecological corridors between the national parks and the regional reserves which create the system of protected areas of the Central Apennines, the Association hopes that the bear can broaden its breeding rage, which is too narrow nowadays, to increase the numbers of new-born bears, estimated to date around 50-60 specimens. Unfortunately, the first causes of bear mortality are connected to human actions, directly or indirectly. So it's important to limit conflicts with anthropogenic activities which could lead to the killing of the so called “confident” animal specimens which are more likely to get closer to human settlements to find food. The bear is an opportunistic animal, which, if it finds sources of easy food, takes advantage of it. That’s why it’s essential to ensure an accurate waste management system in the villages, the safety of farms, vegetable gardens, orchards and apiaries. The Association also tries to promote the feeding of the bear away from human activities, by recovering old abandoned or wild orchards outside the villages through the cleaning of weeds and the pruning of trees. Salviamo l’Orso is an Association of volunteers founded in September 2012 which works to safeguard the brown Marsicanus bear from extinction and gather all the people who care about the bear’s habitat and living conditions. The main commitment of “Salviamo l’Orso'' is to work and act CONCRETELY in order to eradicate or mitigate the detrimental factors which endanger the survival of the last brown Marsicanus bears. A positive action in favour of this species will have a positive impact in all the protected areas of the region and the South- central Apennines.
Our objectives are to:
- INFORM: The Association aims at promoting information on the Bear’s status and on the risks that threaten its survival
- RAISING AWARENESS: The Association aims at promoting and stimulate the relations between civil society organisations and public institutions responsible for the conservation of the species
- MONITORING: The Association aims at monitoring the natural habit to immediately report dangerous situations and the abuse of the environment.
-IMPLEMENTATION: The Association aims at researching and funding projects on the protection of the species and its natural habitat to be implemented with the help and support of partners and volunteers.
Salviamo l’Orso is constantly committed to implement concrete projects to safeguard the brown Marsicanus bear and its natural habitat, funded by its partners, by donations and by national and international funds.
