The Clyde Maritime Trust owns the marine heritage asset the three-masted barque 'Glenlee' which is operated as a Museum Ship and a Visitor Attraction. Glenlee is the only remaining steel square-rigged cargo vessel in the UK. The organisation's aims are to promote marine and maritime culture and heritage and to continue the conservation of this unique vessel. Glenlee is a member of the UK National Historic Fleet, one of just over 200 vessels in the UK of this importance. Glenlee is berthed alongside Glasgow City's Riverside Museum.
To achieve this we work closely with the local communities, the City Council and other National and Maritime organisations.
Glenlee (sometimes referred to as 'The Tall Ship') is a free to enter attraction. This is achieved with support from Glasgow City Council, but this is insufficient and we also rely on commercial activities, donations and volunteers.
Our regular activities include:
- the interpretation of the Glenlee and her history, Glasgow's maritime and mercantile traditions and the history of shipbuilding on the Clyde.
- The maintenance and continued conservation of the Glenlee (and a number of other vessels).
- The operation of a shop and cafe.
- the operation of a workshop to support the conservation and teach skills and boatbuilding.
- A successful educational programme which involves about 7,000 schoolchildren visits annually and is tied to the curriculum for excellence (national educational programme).
- Glenlee also serves as a base for activities of the local seascouts. We also offer overnight experiences for groups of young people such as scouts and guides.
We run a number of events each year one of the major ones of which is the Clydebuilt Festival. Normally in September each year it seeks to involve the local population and communities and involve them in what the River Clyde means to Glasgow and its history. We also run seasonal events to engage with the local and wider Glasgow community. for example this Halloween we are intending a story-telling event with crafts for children.
