The University of Split is a middle-sized university in the European Union with a strong Mediterranean orientation, officially established on the 15th of June 1974 and has expanded during the courses of the past 30 years to include eleven Faculties, one Academy of Arts and four University Departments. The University of Split has about 19 000 students enrolled in the undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate programs and counts approximately 2000 persons, including academic and administrative staff. The key task of the University of Split is to conduct teaching, scientific research, artistic creation and professional activity, based upon principles of quality control and assurance and EU standards. In its Vision, UNIST Strategy 2015-2020 states that the University of Split is aiming to become a leading regional university with a strong Mediterranean orientation. Key activity and mission of UNIST are to attract and motivate students to use the acquired skills in their later work. UNIST has had significant growth in international mobility. This has been proven to be a good example of modernization, accessibility and internationalization of higher education at the local, national and regional level. The strategy of UNIST also includes integration into the European higher education area, internationalization of study programs and design of joint degree programs with European Universities. As part of the European programs, more than 550 ERASMUS + agreements from over 30 countries have been concluded up to 2019. The University is also engaged in other types of partnerships with 70 bilateral exchange agreements with other universities and institutions across the globe. Since October 2019, the University became a member of the European University of the Seas, an initiative launched to create a new model of university education with the implementation of inter-university campuses across the European Union. Long term objectives of UNIST is to reach a balance between economic growth, care for the environment and social well-being; build a recognized network for promoting people to people contacts, intercultural awareness and understanding; establish studies and distance learning programs in long term requirements for labour market with knowledge-based entrepreneurship and smart specialization and provide a unifying link between the student and the society he lives in to make him an active member of the community.
