For 30 years our school has been located in the largest district of Bydgoszcz - Fordon. Currently, 840 students study in 2 preschool classes and 37 classes of our school. A wide range of classes and extracurricular activities has been designed especially for our children - we have sports classes with profiles for handball and basketball. To meet the expectations of the modern world and parents, from the first grade, children can learn in classes with extended English or German. There are also classes with an artistic profile.
The psychological and pedagogical support in our school works effectively. In accordance with the statutory activities of our establishment, we have launched a program of therapeutic interactions. All students of our school are included in the program. We recognize the needs of our dysfunctional students and we are, therefore, aware of the adaptation of all educational and social requirements for these children during the daily teaching and educational process. We care about the equal educational opportunities among our students. Hence we provide the remedial, developing emotional and social competences of a therapeutic nature as well as speech therapy classes for our weaker students. Moreover, as part of these activities, the classes „Look differently” are carried out in early school education. It is worth noting that from year to year there is an increase in the number of students with special educational needs. At present, there are nine students with a wide range of autism spectrum disorders in our school. For each of them, an Individual Educational and Therapeutic Program was prepared, to which each teacher developed a set of methods and adapted the curriculum to their individual needs . As a result, we have started training activities for all employees of our school on how to deal with such students. Four teachers completed their studies in special needs education. The greatest success of our school is the current implementation of the Erasmus+ Project, the title of which is „Understanding an autistic child as a key to didactic success”.
At the same time, recognizing the needs of gifted students, who are children with special educational needs, our teachers individualize the teaching process by using a variety of methods and forms of work during educational activities. For that reason, our school conducts many extracurricular activities, e.g. in English, physics, chemistry or geography, during which the gifted students have a chance to broaden their knowledge and skills according to their interests.
The priorities of our school are the activities aimed at improving the skills and competences of our students in personal, educational, social, civic, cultural and professional development. For this purpose, regular classes relating to career advice as well as advisory classes with class teachers are conducted, during which students learn about different cultures and intercultural dialogue. The primary skill that our students acquire is the ability to recognize their professional abilities so that they can be aware of their subsequent educational decisions in the future. During these classes, students also have an opportunity to develop their interests and abilities.
In 2019, on the occasion of the celebration of the European Day of Languages our school together with the European Educational Programme „ LearningWithoutBorders” was the organizer of language workshops for students of our school. The idea of workshops was to integrate the English language teaching into culture, art, literature, media and entertainment.
The project coordinator, the school head teacher and other English teachers will work together to ensure that both volunteers and children develop their key competences.
Our experience gained so far and the understanding of the needs of children and their parents allow us to create the proper conditions and provide support for future volunteers. The knowledge acquired beforehand will certainly be useful in project management, support and hosting volunteers. Our teaching staff constantly wants to expand their specialist and methodological knowledge as well as promote cultural exchange. We believe that all the above-mentioned activities will contribute to an increase of our skills and knowledge needed to carry out further international projects. As an establishment holding the European Union Solidarity Corps Quality Label we will be able to experience work in an international environment, expand the knowledge of teachers, children and the local community about the idea of international volunteering.
