The Nakelamos Intercultural Association is a non-profit organization founded in 2002 as an informal platform by a group
of Roma and non-Roma in collaboration with students and activists of the Autonomous University of Barcelona.
Nakelamos was created as a multicultural and intercultural entity in 2004, and has a 17-year history of social work and
activism within the Roma community at the local and regional level. Nakelamos develops its activities and projects with
different groups, with special attention to young people and with an important collaboration with other groups and informal
entities in defense of common values and objectives for society.
One of the main objectives is to provide tools to individuals and groups in the Roma community to participate in different
areas of political decision making in the neighborhoods or cities. Participation in existing democratic structures is essential
to strive for inclusion and cohesion, and to claim recognition of Roma as full citizens. Knowledge of local realities enables
you to analyze and discuss people's needs and demands without promoting paternalistic attitudes that end up
undermining self-esteem.
- This organisation holds a European Solidarity Corps Quality Label. The Quality Label certifies that the organisation is able to run projects in compliance with the principles and objectives of the European Solidarity Corps.
