C.E.E CARMEN PICO Schoolis a center for children with special educational needs.
Our school is settled in Alzira, capital of La Ribera Alta County, within Valencia province, on the east coast of Spain. Alzira has a population of 44.938 citizens. In this geographical area there are two principal activities: agriculture and services, and we have two official languages: Spanish and valencian.
The timetable of the center is from Monday to Friday, from 9:30 h to 16:00 h.
School bus and lunch are free for all our pupils.
Our school has distinctive features due to its special context:
1.- Regional range: We have pupils from several nearby towns.
2.- Characteristics of the pupils: Children with serious and permanent special educational needs. We require an educational psychologist report for every pupil that resolves that their necessities are not going to be satisfied in a regular school and they must come to our center. Our pupils have special educational needs due to some of the following intellectual and physical disabilities:
- Autism spectrum disorder
- Behavioural disorder, psychotic disorder, personality disorder with intellectual disability. Multiple disorders related to intellectual disability.
- Serious and deep intellectual disability
- Moderate intellectual disability (exceptionally in ESO and TVA stages)
3.- Resources center and center that supports to the community: Our center takes care of 110 children who are between 3 and 21 years old, and in some cases even until 24 years old.
Our teaching program covers four educational stages :

• Infantil(Kindergarten) : From 3 to 6 years old.
• Primaria (Primary school) : From 6 to 12 years old.
• Secundaria (Secondary school) : From 12 to 16 years old.
• Transición a la vidaadulta (Transition to adult life) : From 16 to 21 years old.
In addition, we offer the program PFQB that deals with sociocultural and community services, for pupils until 21years old, with two additional courses destined to pupils until 24 years old.
Human resources: Our pupils are under the care of 21 teachers specialised in disorders related to mental disability, 5 teachers specialised in hearing and language disorders, 2 physical education teachers, 1 religion teacher, 14 educators, 3 physiotherapists, 3 professional training teachers. We also have 2 school counsellors, 1 school nurse and 1 part-time social worker and 1 part-time doctor.
We promote principles so important such as tolerance, respect and equal opportunities, promoting as well every kind of universal accessibility: physical, sensorial, cognitive, and emotional.
We undertake this task through suitable and effective actions of educational interventions that aim to reach a successful inclusion in social life of all our pupils.
In order to promote these principles, our objectives are:
1.- Develop specific educational inclusive activities for pupils with special needs.
2.- Open a wide range of learning strategies providing of valuable experiences within the educational, social and familiar context. These strategies will increase the average of pupils who reach the objectives and competences, and at the same time reducing absenteeism.
3.- Promote environmental responsibility through ecological activities.
4.- Promote and motivate creative and innovative initiatives learning from the individualities and potentials of each member of society.
5.- Create a common action project and establish nets and bonds in order to exchange good practices at European level.
6.- Increase and enhance the social repercussion of our center, spreading its potential as resources center.
Therefore, we consider that incorporate the voluntary program to our center means a double benefit:
On the one hand, both volunteers and teachers will get a personal development as a result of the exchange of experiences that will make them better improving our society.
On the other hand, our center as a resources centre, within the European setting , will offer the necessary means to European citizens and young volunteers to contribute to their own development , promoting multicultural exchanges and encouraging their inclusion in the local community.
