TIERART Wildlife Sanctuary was established in 2000 with a cooperation with FOUR PAWS International forming by 2013. This global organisation aims to REVEAL inappropriate conditions for animals, RESCUES and PROTECTS them by providing life-long care in sanctuaries around the world. TIERART is one of these sanctuaries and is located in the Rhineland-Palatinate region of south-west Germany, 15 km from the city of Pirmasens. Approximately 14 hectares of this former US military site provide the facilities to rescue and rehabilitate wild animals, and where possible, release them back into the wild. Additionally, since 2015, the sanctuary became a life-long home to big cats formally kept in poor conditions in zoos, circuses or from private ownership. The new, species-appropriate enclosures allow the big cats the opportunity to display natural behaviours, whilst receiving the necessary professional care they need. Since 2017 TIERART has also been operating as a sanctuary for lynx in cooperation with the EU-LIFE-LUCHS project. Here, injured or orphaned lynx from the reintroduction programme are taken in, cared for and subsequently reintroduced into the Palatinate Forest.
The sanctuary also actively educates on the topics of animal and environmental issues, not only to the visiting public but to schools, universities and has acted as unofficial consultants to the Ministry of Environment regarding the lynx project. • TIERART Wildlife Sanctuary wurde im Jahr 2000 gegründet und 2013 wurde eine Zusammenarbeit mit VIER PFOTEN International gegründet. Diese globale Organisation hat sich zum Ziel gesetzt, unangemessene Bedingungen für Tiere aufzudecken, sie zu retten und zu schützen, indem sie indem sie ihnen lebenslange Pflege in Auffangstationen auf der ganzen Welt bietet. TIERART ist eine dieser Auffangstationen und befindet sich in der Rheinland-Pfalz im Südwesten Deutschlands, 15 km von der Stadt Pirmasens entfernt. Ungefähr 14 Hektar dieses ehemaligen US-Militärgeländes bietet die Möglichkeit, Wildtiere zu retten, zu rehabilitieren und, wenn möglich, wieder in die freie Wildbahn. Seit 2015 ist die Auffangstation außerdem ein lebenslanges Zuhause für Großkatzen, die früher unter schlechten Bedingungen in Zoos, Zirkussen oder aus Privatbesitz gehalten wurden. Die neuen, artgerechten Gehege geben den Großkatzen die Möglichkeit, natürliche natürliche Verhaltensweisen zu zeigen, während sie gleichzeitig die notwendige professionelle Pflege erhalten. Seit 2017 ist TIERART auch in Zusammenarbeit mit dem EU-LIFE-LUCHS-Projekt als Luchsauffangstation. Hier werden verletzte oder verwaiste Luchse aus dem Wiederansiedlungsprogramm aufgenommen, gepflegt und anschließend im Pfälzerwald wieder ausgewildert. Die Auffangstation betreibt auch aktive Aufklärungsarbeit zu Tier- und Umweltthemen, nicht nur in der Öffentlichkeit, sondern auch in Schulen und Universitäten und hat das Umweltministerium inoffiziell beim Luchsprojekt beraten. Die Wohltätigkeitsorganisation möchte Freiwillige in die Aufgaben der Organisation integrieren.
