FELIDA Big Cat Sanctuary became a project of FOUR PAWS International in 2014. This global organisation aims to REVEAL inappropriate conditions for animals, RESCUES and PROTECTS them by providing life-long care in sanctuaries around the world. FELIDA is one of these sanctuaries and is located in the northern province of Friesland in the village of Nijeberkoop. Approximately 1 hectare of this site provide the facilities to rescue and rehabilitate big cats focusing on intensive and specialised care for traumatised animals. These big cats come from a number of backgrounds, such as circuses, private keeping and war-torn zoos, and have often had a difficult life before FOUR PAWS rescued them. Some need life-long, special care at the sanctuary while others might recover from their trauma, thanks to the individual care they receive. If they recover, both physically and mentally, a transfer to LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary, our larger sanctuary in South Africa, is considered.
FELIDA's aim is to not only rescue and rehabilitate animals, but to become a knowledge and training centre for Special Care of big cats. This includes workshops, seminars and developing scientific research for professionals already in their field as well as doctoral students. Volunteers and interns looking to pursuit a career within the animal welfare sector will also become a large part of the training centre. Through hosting and sending volunteers, FELIDA hope to achieve this aim.
