Virtual Exchange MOOCs

By partnering with universities and other stakeholders, Erasmus+ Virtual Exchange complements existing MOOCs with a virtual exchange component in order to strengthen intercultural learning and dialogue within these courses.

By adding virtual exchange methodologies to existing MOOCs, it shows how virtual exchange can contribute to ‘regular’ online courses. Both university students as well as the general public are targeted with these virtual exchange ‘powered’ MOOCs.
There are three different formats that are offered to integrate virtual exchange:

  • Asynchronous exchanges
Students will engage in an asynchronous exchange by responding to questions with short videos that they produce. Questions are structured according to the modules of the MOOC. Students are prompted to interact and react to each other’s videos by uploading new videos. The platform is mobile friendly and intuitive so that students can easily engage in the exchange. Facilitators will monitor all discussions, prompt the students and safeguard the process.
  • Synchronous exchanges
Students are scheduled in a series of 3-5 online meetings in which they come together in small subgroups of 8-10 students to discuss subthemes of the MOOC under the guidance of expert facilitators. Typically, these discussions take two hours and every meeting will be connected to a specific module of the MOOC.
  • Blended synchronous and asynchronous exchange
Previous formats are mixed where students first asynchronously exchange videos where after they come together in 1 or 2 live and direct online meetings to conclude their discussions.

We are currently identifying MOOCs and online courses to collaborate with. If you are running a course and want to increase its intercultural and dialogue capacity by adding a Virtual Exchange component, please contact us.

There will be several opportunities for Interactive Open Online Courses over the next several months. Please fill out our expression of interest and you will be contacted about these opportunities as they arise.
