Discover the new European Capitals of Culture

Laatste wijziging Donderdag, 22/01/2026

Oulu in Finland and Trenčín in Slovakia are the two European cities holding the title of European Capital of Culture for 2026.

To promote the European Union values of diversity, solidarity, respect, tolerance and openness, each city will provide a year-long cultural programme.

What are the programmes in each city?

Oulu, Finland
Oulu, a northern port city near the Arctic Circle, will run a rich cultural programme under the theme "Cultural Climate Change," emphasising courage, fairness, cultural diversity and responsibility. The city will encourage audiences to rethink how culture is made, experienced, and shared. Throughout the year, a range of events and activities will celebrate traditions and culture. Celebrations have already started in Oulu, becoming a festival village.

Trenčín, Slovakia
Trenčín's programme, built around the theme of “Curiosity,” will promote bridge-building between people, between past and future, and between imagination and reality. Activities began in December 2025, with a major three-day opening from 13 to 15 February 2026, transforming the entire city into a living stage celebrating culture in all its forms.
