Camp Leader
Veraldarvinir
Worldwide Friends-Veraldarvinir
Hafnarfjörður, Iceland
Description
The project promotes environmental awareness and sustainable practices through practical and educational activities. Camp Leaders work both individually and as part of a team, depending on the needs of each project, and normally support short-term participants who take part in 5–7 hours of activities on weekdays.
Tasks may include outdoor work such as beach cleaning, reforestation, soil work, community projects and other environmental activities. Leaders may also help with logistics, including shopping, transfers and general project organization.
Indoor activities are also part of the role, such as preparing workshops, presentations and discussions related to sustainability. Flexibility, teamwork and initiative are important, as tasks can vary throughout the project.
Accommodation, food and transport arrangements
Participants stay at the Worldwide Friends Houses with fully equipped facilities. Beds, bed linen, Wi-Fi and a washing machine are provided. Rooms usually host 2, 4 or 6 participants. Food ingredients are supplied, with a mainly vegetarian diet and vegan options available, while cooking and cleaning are shared responsibilities. Participants may rotate between different projects and locations depending on the organisation’s needs, so accommodation and daily routines may vary during their stay.
Training during the activity
The project offers meaningful learning opportunities for volunteers, our organization, and the local community. ESC volunteers help strengthen our international dimension through internships, educational tours, and environmental projects. Participants join a 1-week WF Training Program plus the National Agency’s On-Arrival Training. Throughout their service, volunteers gain sustainability skills, learn basic Icelandic, lead creative sessions, and design and implement their own personal project.
Participant profile
We are seeking enthusiastic, motivated, and self-driven volunteers who are eager to take initiative, work independently, and contribute fresh ideas and scalable solutions that support climate action and sustainable living. A good command of English is required, as it is the main working language in our camps. Ideal candidates are open-minded, adaptable, and ready to live in a multicultural environment with other international volunteers. A commitment to sustainability and a genuine interest in addressing global environmental challenges are essential. A strong appreciation for Iceland’s nature and a desire to explore its unique landscapes will greatly enhance your experience.A background or previous experience in Environmental Science is considered an advantage. We highly value volunteers who enjoy outdoor activities—such as hiking, camping, or swimming—as many project tasks and excursions take place in nature.
