Pendik, which has the attribute of being the gateway to Istanbul when coming from Anatolia, is situated on the southwest of the Kocaeli peninsula. Pendik is 39km to the centre of Istanbul. Pendik consists of 5 villages and 33 neighbourhoods. The county has a surface area of about 202km. It has a 9 km coast line.
The district population was measured at 693.599 in the most recent 2018 TÜİK (Turkish Statistical Institute) statistics.
Pendik is an easily accessible district in terms of travel. There are all sorts of transport available in Pendik; such as highway, sea, air and railway. Most of the highway travel is carried out by public transportation. In terms of sea transportation İDO (Istanbul Sea Bus), External Line Sea Bus and Fast Ferry journeys provide transportation from Pendik to Yalova. It is also possible to get to the neighbour districts with the Domestic Line Sea Bus Journeys in the morning hours. Besides this, container freight from abroad is done via the Ro-Ro Port.
There is also railway transportation available in Pendik. There was also an intercity train line that passed from Pendik which provides transportation from Istanbul to many Anatolian and European cities. The Sabiha Gökçen International Airport which is one of two airports in Istanbul is also located in Pendik. The new terminal building with a 25 million annual passenger capacity conducts domestic and international flights under one roof.
Pendik Municipality has carried out many successful projects with EU, National and International funds as well as its own funds with the aim of providing better services and raising the life standards of its citizens and promoting Pendik in the European platform. The public participation shown to the education and training given as part of the projects have shown that Pendik Municipality is on the right path.
There are many centres built by Pendik Municipality in which there are family health, youth, social counselling, research and study centres, disabled and old people centers, fitness rooms, multipurpose halls, libraries, İSMEK (Free Courses for the Public), fitness and multipurpose halls and cafeterias. For example, Atatürk Cultural Centre, Mehmet Akif Ersoy Cultural Centre, Yunus Emre Culture and Arts Centre, Neyzen Tevfik Art Centre, Çamlık Disabled Training and Education Center etc.
There are many new sports facilities built and being built by Pendik Municipality, for example Çamlık Sports Complex and Gedik University Sports Sciences Faculty, Kurtköy Indoor Swimming Pool, Jogging Track on Doğu Neighbourhood etc.
There are many services Pendik Municipality offers to its disadvantaged citizens. For example, Pendik Municipality has a Food Bank which provides hot food and nourishment for families that are in need. Hot Food is delivered to the houses of Ill, old-aged, disabled and lonely people that are unable to cook at home. Packages containing various food supplies are delivered to families in need. 6690 people benefit from hot food every month.
Medical supplies (Battery-Powered and Manual Wheelchairs, Crutches, Disposable Underpants, Sickbed etc.) are provided to those that own a Green Card and those with disabilities on the presence of a Health Report. Stationary help is provided to primary and secondary school students in need in Pendik. Also a suitcase full of various gifts such as a Digital Dictionary, Flash Disk, Calculator, Mug etc. Is given to students that are about to start university.
Pendik Municipality has a Çamlık Disabled Training and Education Center. Information, referral, counselling and theraphy services are provided about the legal rights of the disabled, physical theraphy, hydrotherapy, language theraphy etc. and their families at the daisabled centre. Psychological support is given to overcome the difficulties faced in the daily lives of the disabled individuals and their families.
