GAIA is a Portuguese Environmental NGO. Since 1996 we’ve conducted numerous campaigns on local and national level and have been involved in internatonal campaigns, mainly at European level.
GAIA is one only organisaton, with two actve ofces: in Lisboa and Alentejo region. Our aim is to raise awareness on environmental issues such as climate change, eco-consumpton, food sovereignty and freedom of seeds.
GAIA Lisboa is the headquarters of the organisaton. GAIA Lisboa is mainly actve in natonal and international campaigns, such as the freedom of seeds and Jobs for Climat. One-of events are ofered to the community in the Alfama space.
GAIA Alentejo is actve in the rural South of Portugal since 2006 and its mission is to boost ecological lifestyles through learning experiences, in the context of climate urgency. Target groups are local people of all ages in the villages where GAIA Alentejo operates; young people aged 12-17 and 18-30; local producers and ecological projects.
GAIA Alentejo works in a horizontal structure and explores Sociocracy as governance. We are actve in the following felds: Educaton, Politcal Agroecology, Forest, Regional Network and Communicaton. We currently support:
- the collectve tree nursery of São Luís;
- the community-based AMAP system of producton and consumpton;
- the Ofcina (Workshop) for young people in São Luís;
- internatonal mobility projects for young people (volunteering and youth exchanges) and the local consortum of partners.
