The Conservation Volunteers (TCV)

TCV works in partnership with a wide range of individuals and organisations including schools, businesses, community groups, local authorities and government agencies, to involve people in projects to improve their environment, learn new skills, and at the same time becoming more environmentally aware and more active in their community. TCV provides advice, support, training and information as well as practical action through its own practical groups, including Conservation Action Teams and Green Gym groups. All our projects result in practical environmental improvement through voluntary effort and include tree planting, drystone walling, path creation, woodland management, pond construction, hedgelaying, building school nature areas and creating informal urban open spaces.

The range of work that TCV undertakes can be summarised by the term "triple bottom line". The phrase “the triple bottom line” was first coined in 1994 by John Elkington, the founder of a British consultancy called SustainAbility. It aims to measure the economic, social and environment improvement of a community over a period of time. In TCV, the "triple bottom line" applies to the well-being of the people we work with, their prospects, spaces and their wider communities. Thus TCV’s work can be summarised in 3 main areas of work:

Prospects - helping people to get back to work improves the economic well-being of an individual and their community.

Health - being active outdoors, growing your own food and having the opportunity to interact with others helps improve social well-being.

Outdoor places - people taking responsibility for outdoor places improves the environment.
