Schüler Helfen Leben (short “SHL”) is an aid organization managed by young people. We support youth, education, reconciliation and democracy initiatives in South East Europe and in relation to the Syrian war.

Our Vision
Children and youth are taking up responsibility for themselves and others in their society and are - in a solidary manner - committed to peace, equal opportunities and democracy.

Our Mission
SHL is strengthening young people as experts in their own matter. We – young people – are creating, deciding and taking up responsibility in a solidary manner. Our activities are crossing and exceeding borders and education is central to our programs. Action formats such as the Action Day (“Sozialer Tag”) are mobilizing pupils and are securing our finical basis. Thereby we are supporting projects and initiatives in their commitment on side and are developing forward-effective and long-term partnerships.
We are sensitizing people of different ages for social and political matters in regard to our work. Social commitment within and volunteering for SHL is facilitating intensive learning experiences, personal exchange and networking.
We are creating an environment that welcomes social commitment of young people by partnering with actors from the civil society, politics, the business sector, the media and particularly with schools.
We – as an organization - are constantly learning and evolving.

The Action Day – a day every year on which around and about 80.000 pupils swap their school environment with a job and later support children and youth related projects with their wages - is the focus of our activities. The Action Day is mainly organized by full-time volunteers in our offices. Till today we have raised 23 Million Euros and have enabled and supported 150 project.
We have been recognized and awarded for our work: the Bundesverdienstmedallie (Medal of Merit), recognition as a "Place of Ideas in the Land of Ideas” (2007), the European Citizens Award (2011) and the Hans-Rosenthal-Award (2008).
