Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs of Wales (BGC Wales) traces its roots back to the 1920s and the ‘Collier Boy’ of the South Wales Coalfields. The original Boys’ clubs provided leisure time activities for the young collier boys in the communities of the South Wales mining valleys. Today the Organisation is one of the foremost youth work providers in Wales offering young people new and exciting opportunities through a full and varied programme of sports and activities. We also provide a comprehensive training programme for staff, leaders, volunteers and young people. This includes Levels 2/3 Youth Work qualifications, Sports Leadership Awards, specific sports training, first-aid etc.The young people we work with are mainly resident in areas of socio-economic disadvantage and the local community youth club is often the major provider of fun in the community and the focus of their leisure time attention. The clubs are run by trained leaders and volunteers and also have the support of BGC Wales HQ staff.At BGC Wales we have a small staff team to support the excellent work of these volunteers and to offer additional support and opportunities in our mission to 'assist in the process of moral, cultural, mental and physical development of young people, so as to ensure a smooth transition to adult life and its responsibilities.'
