Founded in 2008, Sharklab-Malta is a registered non-profit, voluntary organisation in Malta dedicated to research, education and raising greater awareness about elasmobranches (sharks, rays and skates) and the marine world. Our main goals are by researching little known species and disseminating information, that we can inform the public, reducing their fear, and encouraging their involvement in protecting the marine environment.

We are part of a large international network of scientists, teachers and community engagement volunteers who are working across Europe (and beyond) to raise awareness of marine habitat heritage and threats. We provide practical research learning opportunities for volunteers and student marine biologists from schools, higher education and the general public, especially for skills development and work placement. We conduct scientific research projects which contribute to the understanding and protection of elasmobranches. We work with other organisations, such as the Malta National Aquarium, Fisheries and ESPLORA Science Museum. We educate young people in local schools and colleges. Each year we present to over 2000 Maltese students and support STEM events at the Teen and Tiny Teen Science cafes,

We believe that what we offer is both important from a conservation perspective, but also as a valuable education tool, for all ages.

The team are all voluntary, and our research has been enhanced for many years by a wide network of international volunteers.
