Primary school OŠ Ivana Cankarja Trbovlje is a smaller public primary school, located in the northern part of Trbovlje, an ex-mining town in Slovenija, Europe. There are around 280 students at the school every year; the students are aged 6 to
15.
Around 30 teachers work at the school, which follows the national curriculum. The school pays special credit to honesty, hard work and solidarity that are the slogan of the institution. Due to the economic situation in the region, many students have rare opportunities to develop intercultural competences. On the other hand, the school as an institution is involved into some health, culture, solidarity events, projects, actions. The social interaction between the staff, the students and the parents is often enlarged by intergenerational and interinstitutional cooperation.
The teachers are qualified educators. The teaching is supported by IT. The gifted and talented students are motivated to take some extra lessons and to participate in different extra curriculum activities (e.g. competitions, exhibitions, cultural events etc.). Our students are good at using EFL, IT, have no problems establishing contacts with students from other parts of Slovenia and abroad.
The school is "cultural school" which means special efforts are made to create interesting and artistic cultural events (at public holidays or some other occasions).
The main goal of the school is for the students to reach the standards fixed by the educational plans issued by the Slovenian educational society (Zavod RS za šolstvo) and the Slovenian government. In addition, the teachers want to involve students into several extra-curricular activities that include cooperation with different societies, clubs and individuals from the local community, Slovenia and abroad. Therefore, the students are taught to become responsible citizens of Slovenija and Europe.
Also, the school staff, not only the teachers, are welcome to participate in different actions, programmes, projects (like ESC) in a formal and less formal way, to develop their linguistic, social, relationship, cultural, digital and other competences. Not only the students, also the employees can gain additional knowledge and experience in tolerance, solidarity, responsibility. They can grow professionally and personally. Meeting the (young) volunteers from different conutries, different economic, geographical, social, cultural, linguistic, ethnic backgrounds, is rewarding in so many ways that everybody is grateful to host these people in our (safe and supportive) school environment.
