The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award (or the Award) is a prestigious educational programme for young people. It was founded in 1956 by British Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh. Since then, 8 million young people in over 140 countries of the world have participated in it. The programme has been available in the Czech Republic since 1995. The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award Czech Republic provides educational programme for young people in the age of 14 - 24. It is a non formal education programme, within which young people gain skills which help them to become active member of society. In the DofE Award participants can develop the activities they are already doing such as taking part in sport activities or playing musical instrument. Or, students can start something they have always dreamed of doing but haven't yet had the reason to begin. What's more, participants set their own goals and plan their activities so that it is fun and challenge for them. First of all, the DofE Award is a personal challenge. Each participant has a unique chance to see itself as a unique personality that we undoubtedly all are. To this knowledge the participant will be led by meeting a number of partial challenges whose particular shape will be chosen by each participant individually under the leadership of experienced leaders or trainers of the programme. Thus, in our programme young people do not compete against each other, but only with themselves. To the goal, the participants will be brought mainly by determination and perseverance. Exceeding yourself and your own expectations therefore becomes the biggest reward for the young person.Participants are invited to take part in such activities as: VOLUNTEERING: when young people get stronger connection to their local community, develop empathy and need of sharing, EXPEDITIONS: during which group of young people themselves sets up an ambitious aim, and is working as a team to reach it (those are expeditions in nature, up to few days, completely planned and implemented by young people), SKILLS: when young people are motivated to discover and develop a specific skill, based on their strength, talent (eg. acting, playing instrument), and SPORT activities: when they decide to regularly take part in chosen sport activities for specific period of time, which aim to make them realize an importance of sport and physical activities for healthy life. Participants are involved in all of those activities and they take part in the programme voluntarily in their free time. The programme is comprised of three levels: Bronze, Silver and Gold – each progressively more challenging. After completing the selected level or levels of the programme, the participants, in addition to getting to know and improving themselves, will receive a certificate of completion of the programme and will take part in an award ceremony attended by personalities not only from the Czech Republic, but also from the United Kingdom. An inseparable part of the programme is finding new friends that look for similar challenges and international opportunities. The Award Certificate will look very well in any CV, proving that participant gained skills, added to your well-being, made an impact on your community and managed to plan and accomplish adventurous journey. These newly gained skills and experiences together with well-taken self-confidence can also help you get to the university or get your dream job.Regarding the activities which that the volunteer fulfil, it can be named the presentations about the DofE programme at International Schools, supporting the Programme manager with administrace and organizational stuff, aocial activities (meeting with members of DofE Alumni Club etc.), visiting involved educational institutions (the Award Units) together with the Programme Coordinator, Helping with preparation and organization of various events organized by the DofE National Office (Regional events etc.).
