E@I has been working since 2005 as a non-governmental organisation with an international field of action. Its main aim is, in the name of solidarity and peace, to stimulate intercultural education and international collaboration and communication, to support learning and the use of Internet technologies and languages as well as to host foreign volunteers an include them into international projects and events. By our projects we strive to promote the access to free and effective education in the sphere of languages to everyone around the globe in order to allow all the people to communicate, as communication is the first step towards a peaceful society. Therefore, we are also messengers of the Esperanto language that stands against language hegemony and tries to preserve the national languages by being “one language for all, a second language for everybody” - Esperanto is a politically neutral language free of any national or other interests that lives through language enthusiasts facilitating global communication and peaceful societies around the world. We are mostly oriented towards education through Internet technologies and we successfully coordinate various projects or participate as a partner organisation. We collaborate with universities, state and non-governmental institutions and organisation as well as many experienced individuals and enthusiastic volunteers. Among the free e-learning platforms for learning languages which we co-created are the following:
* slovake.eu, nominated by EU Commission as "good practice example" and appears in the book “European multilingualism experiences from the lifelong learning programme: key activity 2: languages 2007-2013”. The page has more than 76,800 users from more than 200 countries;
* deutsch.info available in 19 languages, has won an online competition and has been nominated as the "educational webpage of the year" in Germany in 2015, it has more than 511,000 users;
* mluvtecesky.net - chosen by the Czech National Ageency as "the best project of 2015" and has been awarded a label "European label for languages".
* russky.info - chosen by the Slovak National Agency as good practice example in 2017;
* lernu.net - created in 2002 and has been one of the first free multilingual educational webpages in the world, currently available in 34 languages and has more than 286,000 users.
* polsky.info - a platform we are currently working on.
Moreover we organise multicultural events on multilingualism, language equality and innovation in language learning. Examples of some are the following: the world's biggest Polyglot Gathering (polyglotbratislava.com), Summer Esperanto School (ses.ikso.net/2018/en/) or the 1st free-entry international language festival in Slovakia - LingvaFest (lingvafest.sk/en/).
Since December 2012, E@I has been a member of the Civil Society Platform on Multilingualism within the European Commission. One of its main priority is to raise the awareness of the public regarding the importance of language education as well as to propose recommendations to reach the EU goal of having each citizen know at least two foreign languages. Another goal is to propose solutions so that all immigrants can learn the language of their country of residence hence removing or helping remove obstacles to their integration, to support collaboration between local organs and institutions for language education.
Young people are interested in knowing other countries, languages and cultures. E@I is here to help: through the use of educational websites or participation in events, where they have the opportunity to form international contacts, they improve their linguistic and communicational skills and they learn how to effectively use modern technologies. The previous E@I volunteers (within EVS) additionally acquired experience with work in international projects, which counts as a major benefit in terms of oncoming education, job or other activities (work in free time centres, other youth organisations, etc.). E@I is currently hosting 2 EVS volunteers with fewer opportunities (1 with Asperger’s syndrome, the other one suffering from anxiety and panic attacks) and has collaborated with dozens more. Moreover, we are currently looking for other 2 EVS volunteers for our latest project and have applied for ESC volunteers, as our activities prove to have impact on the transition of volunteers onto the labour market making them take meaningful working positions allowing them to contribute to their communities on daily basis. Moreover, each volunteer brings his or her different skillset, mindset and cultural background helping our organisation to grow in every dimension.
