Utilapu Halozat is the Hungarian branch of Service Civil International (SCI), an association organizing voluntary programs. SCI is an international voluntary organization with partner organizations in over 50 European, Asian, North-American and African countries. Our primary activity is organizing summer activities all over the world, where youth coming from different countries perform volunteer work.
Our volunteers participate in organizing training programmes for the leaders of our summer camps and after the camp in the camp evaluation event. We organize international volunteer camps in Hungary and place Hungarian applicants in foreign countries. In addition to this, our association organizes longer (between 3 months and 1 years) volunteer services, youth exchanges and training workshops for our volunteers and helpers. We have several working groups for various project purposes.
Open Doors Working Group: The primary objective is to support the successful integration of young refugees, as well as raising awareness of their Hungarian peers. By using the methodology of design thinking, the three focal points of their program are the practical, creative activities and intensive workshops, the non-formal transfer of cultural knowledge and traditions, and the community-building.
Youth and Unemployment Working Group: since more than ten years Utilapu works with teenagers living in state care. During the school year our volunteers are working together with the social workers to make the youngsters daily life more diverse. We regularly offer English and math lessons, handicraft workshops, 3D printing workshops as well as other common programs during weekends.
GAIA Working Group - Ecology, Sustainability, Fair Trade: this working group is organizing events and information days about Eco-villages, actual issues affecting nature, and everyday ecology.
Peace Messenger Working Group: the members of the group are volunteers who contribute to build and promote a culture of peace by organizing Peace Education sessions in summer camps.
Gender Working Group: this working group is organizing events and discussions to raise awareness for gender equality.
Consequently, as volunteering is our main means, sending and hosting EVS volunteers for several years even before we joined the European Union, we have gained lots of skills and competences throughout our hosted volunteers as well as returning ones.
