The “Zajednica Pape Ivana XXIII” Association has been established in Croatia in 1996 by a group of professional social workers that decided to start a Family House after they became aware of the increasing and widespread problem of addictions in the country following the end of the war. It is a catholic Association, but it welcomes and helps people without discriminating them for other religious beliefs. It is a non-profit organisation with the objectives of:- promoting the social inclusion of disadvantaged and marginalised people (drug addicts, abandoned children, children and adults with physical and mental disabilities, families in vulnerable conditions);- Preventing the causes of social exclusion and poverty. Since its founding, the Association responds to the problem of addiction, a dilemma which characterizes Croatian contest since early ‘90, following the end of the war.The Association gives assistance mainly to drug addicted, dividing them accordingly to the different stage of the recovery path. For this reason the Association, opened different kind of facilities (shelter, family House, residential centre, therapeutic centres), and started to collaborate with many actors committed in the fight against social exclusion, among them local institutions, associations, social services and health service. The Association shares its mission alongside drug addicted, disabled, families in difficulty; the institution searches with unwavering commitment to remove all the causes that create injustice and marginalization. The association is present in the Split-Dalmatian county with 3 houses and 1 house in the Dubrovnik-neretva county (Borovci – 22 beds; Zasiok – 18 beds; Orahu – 16 beds; Veliki Prolog – 21 beds) and 4 drop-in centres in Split, Metković and Zadar, but, according to the characteristics of the phenomenon and its treatment, it hosts people from all parts of Croatia. The detachment from the area of origin is the starting point of the therapy, in particular in case of acute addictions. Moreover, the location of the facilities in small and isolated villages, has the same aim of supporting the gradual reintegration path and promoting the awareness on their situation and self-analysis. In the last year, the Association implemented the following interventions (educational and recreational activities, vocational training and reintegration into society):- Vocational training activities and occupational therapy for former addicted- Educative activities for the social reintegration of former addicted- Psychological support meetings (individual and in group) for the beneficiaries- Reintegration activities through helping the local population in difficulty- Collaboration with the local community centre- Educative prevention programmes in schools- Leisure activities for the beneficiaries
