Peshkar is a multi-platform theatre company whose participatory work with young people is linked to its professional productions.
By using both traditional and non-traditional techniques including digital media, it aims to open up opportunities for the hardest to reach communities through its core values of participation, inspiration, innovation and progression. Its motto: Improving the lives of young people through the arts.

Originally formed in 1991 as a community theatre project for Oldham’s Asian community in direct result of the Race riots in Oldham, Peshkar has evolved into the UK’s leading participatory arts organisation targeting young people who are deemed hard to reach or socially disadvantaged.

As a National Portfolio organization of the Arts Council our commitment to excellence in participatory performing arts practice are framed around our brand values of ‘participation,’ ‘inspiration,’ ‘innovation’ and ‘progression.’ Participants are inspired by our innovative practices and have progressed to a higher level of cultural engagement.

We have recently completed projects with young girls at risk of sexual exploitation, young men in gangs, young people not in education employment or training and community cohesion specific projects. Our work supports young people to reengage with society and communities using arts as a vehicle.

We provide platforms for disadvantaged communities to express themselves, to be heard and to play a bigger part in the wider society. Opportunities and life choices are opened up as young people are introduced and welcomed into the wider creative industries network which enhances aspirations and ultimately improves life chances through involvement in further education, employment or training.
