Our organisation is a school for children from 1st to 9th grade (6 - 15 years old). We are not a traditional Czech school. We were inspired by democratic schools all around the world (Summerhill in England, Sudbury Valley in USA, Escola da Ponte in Portugal, De Ruimte in Netherlands) and we're establishing our very own system of education where children are getting more and more responsibility for their education as they're getting older. Our main goal is to prepare children for life in a changing world of the future. We were founded in 2015 and now there are almost 150 children attending. Since 2015, there were 8 more "Scioschools" founded all around the Czech republic and even one high school in Prague. All the schools are connected through our core values, which are Freedom, Solidarity and Responsibility. At the beginning, there were only these values and we were asking each other - how can we run a school that would allow us and children live these three values? We spent lot of time coming up with ideas and even though we got really far, our job is still not finished. It's a living process, we keep evaluating what we're doing, travelling around the world to get inspired and create the best educational environment possible. Teachers from all our schools meet three times per school year to share what's happening at our schools, what they are going through, what is working well.
At our schools, children are partners and are given the freedom and responsibility that suits them. We encourage children to take responsibility for their education and to actively shape their own lives. We are trying to help them discover and develop their strengths. We would like to offer this experience to foreign volunteers starting at one school, spreading it to other schools as well to create more opportunities for young people from all around the Europe after getting to know the process better.
We are a private school but we are still part of Czech educational system, which means our children are supposed to learn some crucial skills to follow the Czech national curriculum. They attend few compulsory lessons as Czech ot Mathematics, where they can work on the level they need to and then they choose from several projects lasting usually 3 months specialized on various topics across the curriculum where they also meet with children from different age groups. Since September 2018 we've been using a database of "goals" and "challenges" that we created for our students to allow them study in their own way and pace with our assistance. Some of the "challenges" help them get ready for high school entrance exams, some of them might give them ideas for their indiviual projects. Children usually spend at least 4 hours per week workign on their "challenges" and individual projects. We have no marks at our school, only evaluation process that consists of students' self-evaluation, teachers' commentary and then regular parent-teacher-student meetings twice a year.
We consider the general knowledge only as a part of the educational process - we also focus on developing certain competences we came up with within our three core values Freedom, Responsibility and Solidarity. Some of those competences are Good relationships, Self-evaluation, Conflict solving, Planning or Taking care of our school. Younger children are learning about the values and competences by observing other school members living them and they talk about them and think of them in the context of themselves in their classrooms since the first grade. Older children attend regular meetings once per two weeks with their mentors and reflect on how their doing at their self-development and other parts of their educational process. All children and other school members are responsible for a certain area of our school so they are involved in taking care of it.
Our children also have the option of attending an after-school club, there is usually a variety of possible afternoon activities for them or they just spend their time playing together inside or outside of our school. Our school is in a quiet part of Prague, about 30 minutes away from the city center. There is also a big forest just round the corner which we enjoy very much during our school days. We really like field trips as they allow both children and adults to learn from real situations and to spend more time together across different age groups. There are usually more of them during the school year.
