Melkys School is a school of an emerging eco-community in the village of Melkys, located 25 km from
Vilnius center. This school and kindergarten was founded by parents for their children. The home / family atmosphere prevails here, teachers are like parents. The children take care of the school themselves and at the same time develop its rules. We apply humanistic-democratic pedagogical principles, some classes take place outdoors in any weather. We perceive man as a spiritual being, a part of nature. We take into account the individual needs of the child. As well we encourage collaboration, families are actively involved in school creation. The school is growing little by little. We are building a new building made of straw, clay, wood - local eco-raw materials. From 2020 our oldest students at the school will be seventh graders.
We are looking for volunteers who would be fascinated by the very idea of a natural school and its community, and also enjoy working with children. We noticed that the fastest children learn by communicating in a foreign language. Therefore, during the school year, the volunteer could be a teaching assistant contributing to the teaching of a variety of lessons and activities, in use and practice of foreign language . Volunteers should have the space to implement their initiatives, do language clubs with children, cultural activities of their country, and other initiatives they would like to implement in school. With the start of the summer volunteers could also contribute to the establishment of the new building. They could see how some things develop from the very beginning, the construction of the building, installation of premises and start of activities. Volunteers could also get to know the community, participate in celebrations, talks, excursions.
