Founded in 2013, Ecovillage Bergen was the first ecovillage in The Netherlands. Taking root on a former military base and the transformation from war to peace both within and in the manifest are central themes of our village. Our community is a living laboratory for alternative ways of living and working. Each week we welcome a team of volunteers who are central to our mission, and we regularly organize events for curious souls interested in sustainability, spirituality, music, and creativity. At the moment there are 20 people living at the Ecovillage, and a group of 10-15 regular volunteers supporting the project. The next ten years will be exciting for Ecovillage Bergen – we plan to grow our community to a total of 60 people, and will be building at least 25 new homes.
Our goals in sum: strengthening natural values, sustainable coexistence, a new economy including ateliers and workplaces, self-sufficiency in food and energy, supporting the natural development of the landscape and contribution to sustainable tourism. We offer young people a place where they can develop and manifest an initiative related to ecology, new economy, or sustainable culture in collaboration with residents of the village. Our 16-hectares in Bergen, are a place for explore, personal development, and growth. Our target group is young people with an interest in one or two of the pre-identified dimensions listed above who want to devise, co-develop, participate in and implement projects in these areas.
