Discover Europe’s past and present with the help of the European Heritage Label !
Have you always wanted to travel through time? Do you feel fascinated by the stories behind the Europe we know today? Our European heritage and history is vast and can be found everywhere around the continent. But where to start? The European Heritage Label helps you to discover and explore sites that have a symbolic value for our European history and that shaped the continent like you know it. Visiting European Heritage Label sites allows you to travel into different pasts, ranging from the dawn of civilization to the Europe we see today.
You could, for example, visit Krapina in Croatia where archaeologists in 1899 found the largest number of Neanderthal fossil bones in Europe. Or you could travel to Portugal’s beautiful capital Lisbon where in 1867 - as a pioneer - Portugal approved the Charter of Law of Abolition of the Death Penalty which is preserved in the National Archives of Torre do Tombo. Or, why not go to Slovenia and visit the Franja Hospital which Slovenian partisans ran secretly as part as their resistance against the occupying Nazi forces during World War II?
Are you curious about which other time travels are possible? On the European Heritage Label website you can find a list of the 38 sites that already carry the label. From powerful monks during the Middle-Ages to the founding fathers of the EU, all sites offer a different window into our past. What these places do have in common is their European dimension!
