Internships: That’s What Got Me Here: Interview with the European Parliament’s Deputy Spokesperson

Последна актуализация петък, 17/10/2025

What’s it like to become the voice of the European Parliament? In this interview, Oliver Čechmánek speaks with Jim Maher, Deputy Spokesperson of the European Parliament, about his path from teaching Irish on a Fulbright scholarship to shaping EU communication at the highest level.

With over a decade of experience in digital storytelling, policy advising and international relations, including work on the Parliament’s engagement with ASEAN countries, Jim shares practical advice for young people: “Learn languages, take internships seriously, and don’t overlook the technical or backstage roles. That’s often where the real work gets done.”

We also explore how the Parliament functions in practice, from budget negotiations and funding programmes to setting key policy priorities. Jim reflects on youth participation through the European Youth Event and how young people can play a more active role in Europe’s future.
