The power of together

Disability Inclusion & Empowerment Volunteer (5 - 6 months)

ADRA OPS

ADRA Zambia

Lusaka, Zambia

Description

In Zambia, nearly 12% of the population lives with a range of disabilities, both visible and non-visible. People with disabilities face a double burden during disasters such as droughts, floods, pandemics like cholera, and human-induced crises like pollution and economic shocks. Climate change further exacerbates their vulnerability. ADRA works to raise disability awareness and remove barriers—physical, social, and institutional—promoting inclusion at all levels in disaster preparedness and response. Through policies, strategies, and partnerships with other actors, ADRA supports meaningful participation of people with disabilities. As a Disability Inclusion & Empowerment Volunteer, you will actively promote inclusion and gender equality in community initiatives, develop awareness-raising toolkits, engage with communities and build databases of people with disabilities, and support inclusive planning in development activities. --- Interviews will take place on an ongoing basis.

Accommodation, food and transport arrangements

ADRA will provide secure, furnished accommodation in Lusaka, close to the office. You will receive a €450 monthly allowance to cover meals and local transport. Zambians are friendly and speak English and Chinyanja. You can cook at home or eat in local restaurants, with shopping malls easily accessible. Daily transport is mostly by commuter taxis, while for work duties and field visits you will share transport with the ADRA team, with accommodation arranged when needed.

Training during the activity

You will attend online pre-departure training to prepare for the opportunity, as well as on-arrival training (security, basic language, activity requirements/expectations) which will introduce you to the host country teams. You will also have several learning opportunities depending on your own motivation and learning and development needs such as for example Risk Communication and Community Engagement Strategy.

Participant profile

You should hold a university or college degree in one of the following fields: Natural Resources Management, Environmental Science, Social Work, Development Studies, or Climate Action. Strong interpersonal skills, including effective communication and interactive abilities, are preferred. You should also be able to read and write basic English, be computer literate, and have a genuine interest in community work. Additionally, you should be open to integrating into diverse cultures and eager to learn. Appreciation of disability inclusion sub-theme is an added advantage.
