Sustainability & Climate Resilience Advisor

NGO MONDO

CIVS COMMUNITY SERVICE

NAIROBI, Kenia

Beschrijving

The project, implemented by CIVS Kenya, will be carried out at two Resource Centers located in Nyakach and Kuth Awendo in the Kano Plains of Kisumu County. This region is largely dependent on agriculture as the main source of livelihood, yet it is frequently affected by seasonal flooding, which significantly impacts food security and economic stability. In response to these challenges, the BRIDGE project will place strong emphasis on environmental resilience and sustainability. Volunteers will work with community members to raise awareness on climate change adaptation, promote climate-smart agricultural practices, and lead tree planting campaigns. These activities are aimed at reducing the environmental impact of flooding, restoring degraded land, and improving long-term agricultural productivity. Volunteers will also help organize community workshops and school outreach programs to educate both youth and adults on sustainable land use, soil and water conservation.

Regelingen voor accommodatie, eten, en vervoer

Volunteers will stay in a shared, comfortably furnished apartment with basic kitchen and bathroom facilities. Electricity and water are generally reliable but may occasionally be interrupted, enhancing immersion in local life. Volunteers will learn traditional hand-washing of clothes with guidance from local mentors and prepare their own meals. Transport to project sites is by motorcycle, while trips to markets or Kisumu City use public minibuses.

Wat leer je?

As part of the BRIDGE Project (Building Resilience, Innovation, Development, and Gender Equality), volunteers will work toward empowering vulnerable communities, especially women. Training includes skills development workshops, digital literacy enhancement, participation in UN Women Summits, and facilitating digital training sessions. Volunteers will gain hands-on experience in capacity building, stakeholder engagement, and social impact-driven project execution while refining leadership and communication skills.

Wie zoeken we?

Sustainability & Climate Resilience Advisor should have a basic understanding of climate change, floods, and their effects on local communities and ecosystems. They should know how rainfall, rivers, and terrain contribute to flooding and be able to suggest farming methods suited to flood-prone areas. Strong community engagement skills are essential, including the ability to raise awareness about environmental conservation, waste management, and flood preparedness. The role requires adaptability to rural conditions and a hands-on attitude for tasks like tree planting, soil movement, and farm work. Experience in farming, tree planting, and promoting sustainable land use is highly valuable for this position.
