VIER PFOTEN Kosova, was established by FOUR PAWS International in 2012. This global organisation aims to REVEAL inappropriate conditions for animals, RESCUE and PROTECTS them by providing life-long care in sanctuaries around the world. The sanctuary is situated in a green valley at the Badovc lake around 20km from Kosovo's capital city, Prishtina. Approximately 16 ha of the site provides the facilities and natural environment for the 20 rescued brown bears now permanently residing at the centre. Formally kept as "restaurants bears" in Kosovo and Albania, these animals were chained up in small cages near eateries, where they served to attract and entertainment customers. This practise, thanks to Four Paws and the sanctuary this has now ended in Kosovo due to campaigning and educational efforts. The bears now have the opportunity to display natural behaviours in a lifelong home, whilst receiving the necessary professional care they need. In addition to rescuing and rehabilitating bears, the sanctuary actively campaign on a national and international level on animal welfare and environmental protection. The charity has worked closely with the Ministry of Environment and acted as consultants at public hearings and gatherings relating to rescue and welfare efforts. In addition, VIER FPOTEN Kosova have held presentations and created educational materiel to institutes such as universities, as well as providing teacher training on animal and environmental protection.
