Sikanie is an Association of Social Promotion born in 2010, that operates in the areas of social , cultural, environmental and tourist promotion, European mobility projects and training for a better grow of one of the most deprived areas of southern Italy. Since its founding our association promotes the enrichment of the social values of the community through the development of projects and programs to support social gathering and exchange of experiences, knowledge, ideas, languages and cultures with the aim of encouraging the development of social relationships and communication and to contribute to the formation of an open and united society, where being recognized equal dignity and rights to all individuals.It operates in Sicily and throughout Europe. The main goals of the association is to support local development in order to raise standards to European levels, to promote and develop various forms of youth active participation, mobility within and across EU borders, dialogue and integration between people of different geographical origin in the spirit of intercultural, solidarity , cooperation and mutual respect. Specifically, we organize mobility for young people and professionals in the fields of education and training . Our main commitment is to promote European mobility for all the people who wants to draw inspiration and teaching thanks to the exchange of good practice with other European bodies. Our priority areas of intervention are education and the socio-cultural animation, but also volunteering, active citizenship, cooperation, sustainable development and our main activities are classified in the following areas:youth exchange , twinning and mobility in general within and across EU borders;cultural activities ( conferences, seminars, concerts, exhibitions); recreational activities ( theater and musical entertainments, movies and documentaries)training activities: study groups and research, training courses ,exchanges with other associations with similar objectives, promotion of educational and training activities also for disadvantaged youngsters;sports activities: promotion of sports activities , dissemination of sport aimed at improving lifestyles and social relations and aggregation;activities of protection and enhancement of historic, artistic, architectural, environmental, landscape, cultural and natural heritage and also of local traditions as development and tourism promotion;activities to support victims of loneliness, marginalization, exclusion, dependency, violence and abuse.Our initiatives have seen over the years the participation and the continuing collaboration of families and individuals, associations and third sector organizations, local authorities and schools, at local, regional and national levels. This allowed us to increase the effectiveness of actions taken and, when possible, to integrate them into a coherent framework to extend them in qualitative and quantitative terms, and helped make Sikane one of the most active youth associative experiences of the territory and a resource for all the community.We have a permanent staff of 4 people, 20 members and occasional volunteersAll of the board member of Sikanie are volunteers and its strategy is based on voluntary work and we consider the European Voluntary Service an excellent opportunity for youngster's growth, both personal and professional, an opportunity of education for active citizenship, as well as a concrete possibility to contribute to the social and cultural local development which enriches the person who decides to carry out the EVS.We would like to have international cooperation in EVS , plan projects and implement activities according to the needs of the area, creating all possible cooperation and partnership with other NGOs, local government , public bodies, schools, private organizations, educational an cultural institutions.
