The Disability Karate Federation (DKF) is an innovative Disability Sports Organisation and registered charity based in the multi-cultural City of Oxford located in the middle of England. The DKF is the largest disability karate organisation in the world and our board contains both disabled and non-disabled people.
Martial arts were founded on the principles known as the “Seven Virtues of Bushido”; determination, benevolence and compassion, right behaviour and actions, sincerity, integrity and honesty, and responsibility. It is interesting to note that these principles run parallel to both modern sport values and European values. It is these values which underpin the work of the DKF. This is also highly relevant in education which nurtures the development of character, values, and life skills.
Martial Arts are not the object of what we do, but martial arts are iconic and they are fun. Everyone has heard of Bruce Lee, the Karate Kid or Kung Fu Panda, everyone has attempted that karate chop. Ever popular and with wide appeal, martial arts have the potential to create social change. Martial arts are as vibrant, engaging and relevant to young people today as they have always been.
In accordance with our constitution, martial arts are the vehicle we use to create outcomes in physical and mental well-being and personal development, and how we build and strengthen inclusion in traditional communities and the new modern communities of social media. We use the martial arts to create volunteering, education and employment opportunities for young non-disabled people and for people who are disabled, disadvantaged, suffering from mental illness, infirmity or living with poverty.
The DKF creates mass participation and has grown participation in martial arts to over 2000 disabled and disadvantaged members participating in regular weekly sessions and is the largest organisation in the world using karate to create social change.
The DKF take sessions of inclusive martial arts into schools, colleges, day care centres and universities. Using non-formal and informal methods, we train people without any skills in martial arts to deliver sessions of martial arts in an inclusive way and we also train the trainers. The same inclusion theory may also be used in other sports.
We used cloud-based technologies to run our organisation from insight through to impact. We use technology to map the processes of our work , efforts and resources into Work Packages so that we can work in a cooperative way with other associations and organisations when it comes to cultural activities, sport, leisure and educational activities.
We provide a wide offer of activities during the year including photography, cooking and nutrition, technology, empowerment training, social media, sporting activities, creative and cultural activities, activities for youth such as summer camps and trips and social activities. We provide buddies to co-coach alongside disabled or disadvantaged people where help is needed. We provide buddies to help disabled people to participate and we provide assistants to help coaches wherever necessary
The duty of the volunteers may be in any of the areas in which we operate, so they will be in contact with young disabled and non-disabled people most of the time. The volunteer’s role will be to create, plan and participate in an active way in their preferred activities.
