İstanbul University is Turkey’s oldest University, with its roots tracing back to 1453. As a renowned university, located in 14 Campuses in and around the city, Istanbul University is a public Higher Education Institution comprising: 23 Faculties, 1 Conservatory, 7 Vocational Schools, 2 Colleges, 17 Graduate Schools, 60 Research Centers and 2 Hospitals with bed capacity of 3,500-4,000 and 2.5 million outpatients and 100,000 inpatients per annum. In total the university is home to more than 250.000 students attended by 12.337 administrative and 5.784 academic staff.

According to the Academic Ranking of Worldwide Universities, Istanbul University is listed among the first 500 and as per Times Higher Education World University Rankings is among the first 800 universities for the academic year of 2016-2017.

As a university aiming to increase research and innovation, 5% of the funds are allocated for research and development. Along with the contribution of research projects for the EU and the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Tukey (TUBİTAK), supporting 2.5000 projects, university’s annual research fund is approximately 40 million. According to the official data of the European Commission, İstanbul University is among the most successful 10 Turkish research organizations with its ongoing Horizon 2020 projects.
