The International School of Leuven (ISL) was set up in 2013 as a private non-profit organization by the City of Leuven, the University of Leuven (KU Leuven), IMEC (Nano-technology research center) and the Flanders Biotechnology Institute (VIB). ISL offers pre-primary and primary education in English for children of the wider Leuven region expatriate community. ISL has adopted the International Primary Curriculum (IPC), which aims to strike a balance between academic and personal development within the context of a programme with a strong international focus. ISL is a member of the European Council of International Schools (ECIS) and an active participant in the regional association of International School Primary Heads (Belgium-Luxembourg).

ISL educates about 65 children between the ages of 2.5 and 12 years old and is growing rapidly. Students and staff at ISL represent approximately 30 nationalities. It is our mission to create a joyful and inspirational learning environment that will enable young learners to reach their full educational and personal potential. This will help them to become self-confident and respectful world citizens. Staff at ISL care deeply about each of the children that we have the privilege of working with, and it is that bond that drives us to do everything that we can to ensure that each child obtains a love of learning that will contribute to his or her later successes. We are developing on-going relationships with our local community and nearby Flemish schools. We also aim to develop a sense of students’ own national and cultural identity, while at the same time growing a profound respect for the nationalities and cultures of others. We offer a safe, child-centered learning environment that allows children to be independent, creative and a reflective problem-solver and which is wholly supportive of each child’s own unique abilities. Students are given the opportunity to develop the skills they need for life and are encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning.
