German Dance Film Institute Bremen is a national archive. The Institute collects, archives, processes, and produces audio-visual dance documents. The institute was established in 1988 as a nonprofit organisation. Today, the institute has a stock of more than 35,000 videotapes featuring dance national and international dance history. For example, the focus of the collection lies in film materials on the history of German dance-theatre since the 1970s. In recent years, that Archive was supplemented by recordings of the classical ballet of the big stages in Germany. The aim of the German Dance Film Institute is to support the work of choreographers, dance companies, theatres, specialist journalists and broadcasters by providing the collected materials and helps to produce, restore and digitize dance videos and films.
Our institute is a place of research and inspiration for many different professions ranging from dancers, scientists, choreographer, and enthusiasts alike. Once a month we host an event called "Tanzsalon", on which the current happenings in the world of
dance and current films and movie productions are shown and talked about. The institute creates its own video productions, organises events and lectures and collaborates on projects with other cultural institutions on regional, national, and international level.
