The Animal Shelter in Poznań works to improve the welfare of homeless and abandoned animals while educating the community about responsible pet ownership and care. We aim to ensure the safety and care of animals, increase responsible adoptions, reduce abandonment through prevention (spay/neuter and microchipping), and promote a One Health approach that protects both people and animals. The shelter cares for cats and dogs. Within the ESC activities, volunteers will primarily support cat-focused tasks. Our main activities include humane intake and daily care. Cat socialisation and environmental enrichment (low-stress handling, enrichment plans, “catification” of rooms) to boost adoption readiness. Adopter support with clear, welfare-friendly guidance, and non-formal education delivered in the community and schools (with NGO partners) on topics like spay/neuter, microchipping, and creating animal-friendly homes. We combine onsite learning with digital outreach (social media, short captioned videos, accessible materials) and apply simple, eco-aware routines (selective waste handling, durable enrichment tools). In parallel, the shelter provides routine care and adoption support for dogs as part of our broader mission. Our target groups include adopters and pet guardians, volunteers (including youth and those from underrepresented communities), school groups, and the broader local community.
