The hosting organization offers an alternative education for 60 children aged 6-14 years, based on principles of progressive education, Montessori ideas and nonviolent communication. The aim is supporting and guiding the children on their way to become responsible, confident and open-minded persons.The school integrates two volunteers closely into the daily work and the community. You and your personal, cultural, and lingual background are considered as an enriching support to the school and to the education of the children. Daily work in the school consists on project groups as a main tool, characterized by the idea that they work in an independent way, but always guided and supported by teachers (and by you). This leaves much opportunity for volunteers to accompany the children in their process of learning, but also in after school care. You will become gradually acquainted with the environment and the learning materials, always thanks to the support of qualified teachers.
Logi, mad og transport
The school is close to both the centre of Leibnitz and the train station. A proper accommodation in Leibnitz will be offered you, in an apartment where you'll have your own room. You can reach the school by means of public transport, since the coordinating organization will provide you a ticket to use all public transport in the region. You'll receive a monthly allowance of 430-460 euros (as of food money, and as of pocket money). The travel costs from Italy and Austria and back are fully reimbursed. An insurance company agreed with European Union will cover you from any possible risk.
Oplæring under aktiviteten
You will attend three official training sessions: a pre-departure training before leaving Italy, a so-called “on-arrival training” in a few weeks after your advent in Austria and a mid-term training at around half your volunteering. You will be also offered a German language course. Concerning the activities in the school, its experienced staff will help you through task related support, supervision and guidance for all necessary time.
Deltagerens profil
The hosting organization is looking for volunteers who are responsible and motivated to help students and assist teachers. Youngsters who are open-minded, active, and have a sense of initiative. It is important to be able to deal with children of different ages and social backgrounds, as well as to have an interest in pedagogy, both common and alternative, and specific skills in arts, music, handicrafts or sports. Obviously, you must love working with children, and feel confident to be able to assist teachers during lessons and in after school activities.
