ROOTED! is a 14-day ESC Team Volunteering project hosted by COB in Nessonas, central Greece. It brings together young people from across Europe and the Balkans to engage in hands-on regenerative practices, food forest care, natural building and community beautification. Volunteers will co-create an inspiring space for ecological learning and connection, supporting rural resilience and community-led sustainability. Daily life includes communal living, practical workshops, eco-living routines and intercultural exchange in a natural environment. The project promotes solidarity, inclusion and care — for each other, the land and the future.

Volunteers will be hosted at the COB permacultutre farm in shared rooms or tents with access to compost toilets, solar showers and basic eco-friendly facilities. Nutricious vegan meals will be prepared collectively using fresh local ingredients straigjt from our gardens. Volunteers should help with cooking and cleaning. Travel costs will be reimbursed up to the approved Erasmus+ max limit after return. Group pickups, taxi sharing or bus from Larissa city to the venue will be arranged on arrival and departure days.

Volunteers will take part in daily hands-on workshops and learning sessions focused on food forest care, permaculture, building renovation and community resilience. Training includes practical eco-skills, DIY techniques, group decision-making, and regenerative living practices. Learning is non-formal, peer-led, and experiential, with space for personal reflection, intercultural exchange, and community building. Volunteers will also be supported to develop their own initiatives and creative contributions to the project.

This ESC Team Volunteering project is open to young people aged 18–30 who are residents of ESC Programme Countries, with a strong focus on participants from the Balkans region. We aim to build a Balkan youth community rooted in solidarity, regeneration and cultural exchange and we value diversity in all forms. No previous experience is required. What we care about is your motivation, willingness to learn and openness to live and work collectively in a rural environment. We are looking for participants who are: • Passionate or curious about permaculture, regenerative practices, food forests and low-tech living; • Interested in connecting with other young people from the Balkans to co-create solutions for our common environmental and social challenges; • Ready to engage in manual, outdoor work (e.g. gardening, building, maintenance, cooking, cleaning); • Respectful and open to intercultural dialogue, gender equality, and inclusive group living; • Able to live in basic eco-friendly conditions (compost toilets, outdoor showers, simple shared spaces); • Comfortable with or open to vegetarian/vegan food, shared cooking, and care for collective resources; • Interested in community resilience, climate justice, rural regeneration, and youth participation; • Communicative in basic English (working language), with support from group leaders or facilitators when needed. This is not a tourist program, it’s a collective action rooted in care for the land, for others and for ourselves. Participants are expected to take initiative, be proactive and contribute with care and respect. We particularly encourage applications from: • Young people with fewer opportunities (economic, social, geographical, or educational obstacles); • Those coming from rural or semi-rural backgrounds; • Young changemakers ready to bring inspiration and tools back to their communities; • First-time volunteers in European projects who want to get involved in grassroots ecological action.
