ADRA-ADVENTIST DEVELOPMENT AND RELIEF AGENCY

UGANDA PIONEERS ASSOCIATION

KAMPALA, Uganda

Beskrivning

Treasure Junior School was established in 2009 to support orphans in Uganda, many of whom lost their parents due to the Northern War and AIDS. The school, along with its kindergarten, serves 270 children aged 3-15. It is located in a densely populated suburb with poor living conditions and inadequate educational infrastructure, 6 km from Kampala. Description of tasks: 1) Support as a co-teacher in classroom, 2) Support in co-curricular and extracurricular activities (e.g., teaching creative subjects such as dance, music, art, drawing, or physical education), 3) Build the capacity of the team by enhancing pedagogical knowledge and skills, 4) Assist in computer training lessons for staff and learners, 5) Train staff and learners in basic digital competency skills, 6) Optional, depending on the volunteer's skills: Design a simple webpage for the school, establish social media platforms; train the staff on how to use them.

Logi, mat och transporter

Accommodation will be provided in a shared apartment with other volunteers, each having their own lockable bedroom, located in the suburbs of Kampala. A monthly allowance will be provided to cover food, transport, and communication expenses. The volunteer will be responsible for preparing their own meals. Public transport in and around Kampala primarily consists of commuter taxis, known locally as Matatus. For shorter distances within the community, the volunteer will mainly use motorbikes called Boda Bodas.

Utbildning under verksamheten

The volunteer will participate in an online pre-departure training, followed by an in-person induction upon arrival at the host organization. Additionally, the volunteer will be encouraged and provided with financial support to learn the local language.

Deltagarens profil

Previous experience working with children, even in informal settings, is desirable. While a background in teaching is beneficial, ability should be valued over formal qualifications. The most important attributes of a suitable volunteer are a love for children, creativity, friendliness, and a cheerful attitude. The volunteer must be open-minded and emotionally resilient, with the ability to adapt to the local environment. The volunteer must be proficient in English.
