“YOU COMPOSE: Youth Competences and Composting Practices for Inclusive Communities” is an ESC Volunteering Teams in High Priority Areas project that will bring volunteers together in solidarity activities Argo operates within the premises of the Psychiatric Hospital of Thessaloniki and supports ex-mental health patients and rehabilitating drug addicts in their social reintegration, with permaculture and other activities. Thus, volunteers will work side to side with the beneficiaries, always in a monitored and protected environment and: -Support in organic farming activities and non-formal methods with the aim of fostering social interaction of the patients They will further take up some tasks linked to media, such as to write magazine and blog articles, engage in video or photo editing or social media production, based on their preferences. In addition, volunteers will support environmental campaigns in the city and the creation of community compost points.

Volunteers are going to be accommodated in a fully equipped building located in the city centre (Anagnostara 13) near the main bus station of the city. It is an autonomous 5 floored building of 150 m2 per floor. There are two living rooms and a big kitchen, showers in the common floors and toilets in every floor. Volunteer from our other projects also stay in the house. Each volunteer will share their room with one or three more people of the same gender. Food is provided through catering service, Monday-Friday. City transport cards can also be provided to volunteers (metro or/and bus).

Volunteers will have to be 18-30 years old and be genuinely interest in the project. Main aspect during selection will be their motivation to join and contribute in the activities. At least a basic English language level is required, for volunteers to have at least one communication language to be used in the field or in case of need or emergency. Volunteers need to be motivated about this topic. In addition, some experience with similar target groups (mental health patients, drug addicts, etc) will be a pro. Having a background or knowledge in agriculture would be a valuable asset, but not a pre-requisite. Volunteers need to also be ready to engage in some more “physical” tasks as part of the activities, as they would have to work in an organic farm. Regarding the inclusion of people with fewer opportunities, USB will guarantee safety and support for the participation for youngsters facing obstacles, thanks to its long experience of working with people from socially vulnerable groups. Working program will be 4-6 hours per day, from Monday to Friday. In some cases, volunteers may be asked to work in weekends for some events, for example for the implementation of some event or workshop. If this happens, they will receive extra free days to use later on. Applicants should know that participation throughout the whole 45 days activity period of the team is mandatory. Note: The project is Volunteering Teams and does not exclude you from taking part in long-term or short term individual ESC in the future, and you’re also eligible if you took part in the past, respecting the 12 month limit rule for participation in ESC projects.
