The volunteer sent by ASPEm as part of the PUENTES project will collaborate with the CDRO association in Totonicapán to support the Community Environmental Education Program. Planned activities include: promoting ecological values among children and youth in the communities, fostering forest and biodiversity conservation; developing innovative methodologies and educational materials, including short films and mural projects, for environmental education aimed at children and youth; promoting environmental fairs at the community and municipal levels to raise awareness about the protection of water and forests; promoting women’s empowerment in sustainable resource management through education and awareness-raising; fostering networks of women producers to strengthen their participation in community life. The activity takes place from Monday to Friday, with a 30–40 hours weekly commitment (excluding travel time), alternating between office work and field activities in the communities.

Totonicapán has well-preserved forests and low crime thanks to strong community traditions. The accommodation for volunteers is in the town centre, ensuring safety and easy access to services. It offers individual rooms, basic utilities (hot water, electricity, gas, internet) and is about 500 meters from a laundry facility. In Totonicapán it’s possible to find all kinds of vegetables, legumes, herbs and meat, so volunteers can plan their meals independently. Typical dishes are maize-based. Volunteers reach the office with a 10-minute walk to the minibus stop followed by a 15-minute ride.

The volunteer takes part in a pre-departure training with ASPEm in Italy or Spain and an additional training with CDRO upon arrival to understand the organization and local context. During the project, they engage in environmental educator trainings delivered by the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources and national context analysis workshops, combined with peer exchange among volunteers and daily hands-on learning. The experience develops practical and intercultural competences, enhancing adaptability, communication and connections with local communities. Final Youthpass certificate.

A volunteer is sought with a background preferably in pedagogy or education, such as a pedagogue or primary or secondary school teacher. There are no mandatory requirements, but experience or interest in the educational field and the use of technology to create materials, particularly for children, is highly valued. The ideal candidate demonstrates adaptability to new and intercultural contexts, as well as strong teamwork, collaboration, effective communication, and active listening skills. Competences such as problem-solving, managing unexpected situations, autonomy, sense of responsibility, flexibility, and openness to change are also appreciated. Good time management and organizational skills are important, together with proactivity, initiative, empathy, and intercultural sensitivity, as well as a willingness to engage in continuous learning within the context. The position also requires openness to an immersive experience, with the ability to engage with community dynamics and contribute from a respectful and participatory educational perspective. Eligibility: Candidates must be 18 to 35 years old, reside in one of the eligible countries (EU Member State, North Macedonia, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Turkey), have completed the compulsory Humanitarian Aid Volunteering training and not have participated before in individual Humanitarian Aid Volunteering. When adding together this new volunteering opportunity and any previous participation in EU volunteering programmes, the total duration cannot exceed 12 months.
